Overview
The Department of Public Works seeks capable staff to perform Maintenance, Third Class functions. The job duties below are reflective of those outlined in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Labor Services Manual. The employee hired from this posting will be focused on trash/litter mitigation throughout the city, and/or ongoing park and street maintenance programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform ALL heavy laboring tasks required in the operation of the Department of Public Works, and other related work incidental to this type of work.
• Operate all heavy motor equipment and accessories and perform normal driver maintenance functions on vehicles.
• Perform the duties of an asphalt raker as required.
• Assist in the proper placement in the setting of curbs.
• Tend the mason, obtaining the materials and properly mixing cement when required.
• Perform simple gardening tasks such as, raking loam, seeding, fertilization, grading, spraying, lawn sweeping, trimming and liming, planting of shrubbery, tree, etc. Operate power lawn mowers, riding or walk behind types.
• Install and maintain playground equipment, mark football, softball fields and baseball diamonds.
• Maintain courts, beaches, swimming areas, golf course, greenhouse and garden areas, cinder track, and flooding skating areas. Also, operate power saws, weed eaters etc.
• Make general carpentry and plumbing repairs below the journeyman level.
• Take part in snow removal and sanding operations as required.
• Ability to understand and willingness to perform the above-mentioned duties and related work as required.
• When applicants are substantially similar in terms of qualifications, preference will be given to candidates who have resided in the City of Lynn for a continuous twelve-month period prior to the date of posting

Requirements

Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Class B with Airbrakes required within six months of appointment, if not already obtained. Priority will be given to applicants in possession of a valid CDL Class B license. Bilingual/bicultural applicants strongly encouraged to apply. When applicants are substantially similar in terms of qualifications, preference will be given to candidates who have resided in the City of Lynn for a continuous twelve-month period prior to the date of posting.

*Please note that the salary scale is projected according to contractually negotiated salary increases between the City and AFSCME Local 193 through Fiscal Year 2025.
