Overview:
Under the auspices of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer in the Mayor’s Office, the Spanish Language Engagement Specialist (SLES) will assist individuals whose main language or language preference is Spanish. The SLES will ensure Spanish language access for the residents of Lynn by facilitating timely access to important City services, facilitating answers to questions about City government, and other local agencies. These services will be performed on site at City Hall, with additional offsite obligations as the emerge. The SLES will be supervised by the Language Access Coordinator.

Mission:
• The SLES will remove language and cultural barriers and other challenges to accessing City services, will share information about City initiatives, and opportunities for community engagement. The SLES will serve as a cultural navigator for all residents looking for support, and will have compassion and understanding in working with the residents of Lynn.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Offer in-person and phone interpretation to residents in City Hall.
• Translate city documents.
• Answer calls and direct residents to appropriate services.
• Correspond to resident emails.
• Use a data collection system to quantify resident outreach.
• Facilitate civic participation in the community member’s preferred language
• Offer support and public interpreting services at community events and gatherings organized by Lynn City Hall (1:1 and for large audiences).
• Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all clients and residents.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree or high school diploma with 8-10 years’ work experience.
• Experience handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
• Native speaker of the Spanish language with full command of standard usage and style (verbal and written skills).
• English fluency required, with full command of standard usage and style verbal and written skills).
• Ability to interpret back and forth from English to Spanish without difficulty and in live-interpretation settings.
• Ability to translate documents accurately and efficiently.
• Willingness to be flexible and adaptable.
• Experience being a cultural navigator for people of diverse backgrounds in Lynn or a similar community.
• When applicants are substantially similar in terms of qualifications, preference will be given to candidates who have resided in the City of Lynn for a continuous twelve-month period prior to the date of posting.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience being a full-time translator and/or interpreter.
• Interpreter certification (medical, community or other) from an accredited entity.
• Knowledge of community and social services offered in Lynn.
